The hackathon is only for students.

What is Smart City Case Competition?

Smart City Case Competition is your chance to work with data in a creative way and potentially be of influence to many citizens in and around Aarhus. The three best teams will have to present their solutions at the mainstage at the OffDig 2019 conference with more than 1500 attendees, at which the final voting and praise will find place. 

The Smart City Case Competition is held at and in collaboration with Aarhus CityLab, which is one of the recent Smart City initiatives, with the purpose of establishing an open test facility for Smart City solutions and a showroom for new Smart City initiatives.

Who can participate 

We welcome a diverse group of students from higher educations (academies, universities etc. ) coming from all over the country.
It is not a necessity to have technical skills and there are no pre-requisites.

You can register as an individual or in groups of maximum 5 people. 

There are a limited amount of spots available and the deadline for applying is Monday the 5th of February. When the number of registrations exceed the limit, there will be a waiting list.

The Case Context

Aarhus CityLab is located in the city of Aarhus, at a very exciting place in the newly established harbor area between Navitas (a knowledge and entrepreneurial hub) and DOKK1 (the public library and home of the city’s citizens’ services and innovation center). 

The multifunctional area by the seafront facilitates citizens in transit to work or study as well as provide a small break in the daily city life and humdrum. It creates an atmosphere that is buzzing yet calm at the same time. The area is also used for different cultural events. DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation) used the area for a very successful event during the FIFA World Cup, where citizens could play football and engage in different activities. It furthermore provided a unique space for their tv-studio from which they covered the World Cup.

CityLab has a dynamic and flexible open play court for outdoor sports e.g. football and basketball and a playful water artwork by the artist Jeppe Hein that invites the citizens to play and interact with one another. This seemingly non-technological area is in fact also a high tech area and currently several sensors as well as a large scale LED screen provides a unique way of presenting data from the surrounding sensors.

However the concept of a Smart City can be hard to make tangible for citizens; The data a city produces is often invisible in the urban environment and not something you can easily interact with unless you have some technical skills.

The problem - so therefore we ask

How can we create engaging solutions, interactive experiences or creative experiments for and with the citizens at Aarhus CityLab, that make use of the data that is produced by the City (municipality), its citizens and companies?
